Lyrics meaning

The singer describes being overwhelmed by love for someone who has left her. At first, she sits by the window watching the rain, alone and reflective. Her feelings then turn into frustration and hurt: she wanted to love and hold her partner, but he is gone, and she cannot understand why. By the end, she insists that her love should not be meaningless, even as she keeps asking for an explanation.

The central image, โ€œa ball and chain,โ€ compares love to a heavy weight attached to a prisoner: it holds the singer back and makes her feel dragged down. The rain outside the window echoes her sadness, though it is also simply a scene she returns to. When she asks why โ€œevery little tiny thingโ€ she holds on to goes wrong, she suggests a wider pattern of disappointment, not just one painful breakup. โ€œIt ainโ€™t fairโ€ is a direct complaint that her partnerโ€™s actions feel unjust.

The songโ€™s repeated questions show how hard it is for the singer to make sense of the relationship. โ€œLoveโ€ may mean her attachment to this particular man, or the painful experience of loving someone who does not return that love as she hopes. The ending does not resolve the hurt: her insistence that it cannot be โ€œin vainโ€ sounds both like hope and an attempt to reassure herself.
