My dad worked at the power plant
His dad did too
I got a job here working third shift
Soon as I finished high school
ย
They didn't give me insurance
But it was $30,000 starting out
I had a wife and little baby
And dreams of buying us a house
And I was the light in my daddy's eyes
Yeah I was the light in my daddy's eyes
I've been working here for 10 years now
My son just started 7th grade
And his sister just turned 3 years old
And there's another little baby on the way
ย
Hadn't had a raise in 8 long years
Times are getting kinda tough
Since the suits ran off the union
Seems like they're the only ones that have enough
Daddy just turned 63
He's too old to work but too young to retire
He fell last year and hurt his back
The hospital bills just keep getting higher
They gave him OxyContin said it would help him with the pain
But now he's got another problem
And for that one they don't do a goddam thing
And I couldn't see the light in my daddy's eyes
Yeah I couldn't see the light in my daddy's eyes
ย
My wife and I packed up the kids and we're finally getting out
I got a job driving a school bus
In this quiet little Alabama town
I work from 6 to 6
I get my summers off
My wife says the pay is alright
The most important thing to me is
I get to tuck my babies in at night
And I hope they see the light in their daddy's eyes
Yeah I hope they see the light in their daddy's eyes
