Lyrics meaning
The lyrics sketch a conflict between a young punk rocker and his mother. She does not understand him, destroys a record associated with political ideas, and seems to try to send him to war. The repeated announcement that the war is over shifts the mood from confrontation toward release. When Sammy is told it is time to leave home, the ending suggests a new stage of independence, though it does not explain what he will do next.
The smashed record is a concrete sign of the motherโs rejection of Sammyโs tastes and perhaps of the ideas she fears he will hear. Calling its message a โlectureโ makes her response sound dismissive: she treats music and politics as something being imposed on him. โTake him to warโ may mean literal involvement in war, but in the songโs compressed story it can also suggest a harsher world of conflict and control.
The refrain about reaching the warโs end can be heard as relief after a struggle, or as a sarcastic, exaggerated way to describe a family disagreement. The lyrics do not say whether Sammyโs mother changes her mind, or whether leaving home resolves anything. That uncertainty gives the ending two possible feelings at once: freedom from the immediate conflict and the unsettling prospect of facing life on his own.
