Stop Whispering

The lyrics describe someone who feels rejected, silenced, and unable to respond. Other voices tell the speaker they do not want to hear them, while the repeated command to “stop whispering, start shouting” suggests a struggle to speak more openly. The song moves between frustration and helplessness: the speaker is urged to make their voice heard, yet later cannot even remember what they wanted to complain about.

Several images make this rejection feel widespread. The “wise man” and “thin man” may represent different kinds of people, but both dismiss the speaker. When the mother and the buildings seem to “spit” at someone, the hostility appears to come from both personal relationships and the surrounding world. “Find the words” and “find the songs” are figurative ways of describing a loss of expression or confidence.

The complaint to “Dear Sir” sounds formal, as if the speaker is trying to address an authority or make a case. But forgetting the complaint, then saying it does not matter, can suggest exhaustion, resignation, or a belief that nobody will listen. It is also possible to hear the repeated shouting as an attempt at defiance, even though the lyrics never show whether speaking up changes anything.
