Lyrics meaning
The song describes children growing up in a family that is always travelling with their father. At first, life on the road seems adventurous, especially around the evening campfire, but the children also find it tiring and long for a stable home. The mother shares that dream. By the end, the family has scattered, and the father’s journey continues in memory, giving the song a wistful, slightly sad feeling.
The “white house” represents a settled, secure home, in contrast with the family’s moving wagon. The repeated complaint that the road is “long” and “far” expresses both physical weariness and a wish for the father to stop. Later, the children are said to have been scattered “like grains of wheat”: this image suggests that each went off in a different direction, as seeds spread across a field.
The father is portrayed as free-spirited, but his freedom has a cost for those travelling with him. The lyrics do not say whether he deliberately chose a life that kept the family moving, or simply failed to notice how it affected them. The ending leaves the wagon still rolling, which may suggest that his restless way of life continues, while the children’s memories hold both affection and regret.
