Lyrics meaning

The speaker is shutting someone out, telling them not to visit or even think of them. At first, the speaker sounds firm and certain: they say they did what they had to do and blame the other person. As the lyrics continue, however, the speaker seems distressed and overwhelmed. The repeated blame may be less a clear explanation than a way to manage painful feelings.

โ€œVoices in my headโ€ suggests troubling thoughts or memories that feel difficult to control. โ€œFootsteps in the hallโ€ may mean the speaker imagines the other person nearby, or feels haunted by their memory. The โ€œscratchesโ€ counted as one for each day since the speaker โ€œfell apartโ€ suggest visible signs of ongoing suffering; the lyrics do not explain exactly how they happened. โ€œPictures on my chestโ€ could refer to actual pictures, or to memories the speaker carries close to the heart.

The song leaves important questions unanswered. The speaker insists the other person was the reason for their actions, then admits there may have been no reason at all. This shift makes the blame sound uncertain, perhaps even self-aware: the speaker may know that blaming someone helps them avoid facing their own pain. Still, the lyrics do not establish what happened between the two people, so several readings remain possible.
