Cloud of Unknowing

The lyrics describe someone reaching toward a person they cannot quite connect with. At first, the speaker feels that the world is open, yet also watched from above. The effort to find a way into the other person’s heart continues, but the mood grows more uncertain: days seem to disappear, and love is described as sinking. The ending leaves room for hope, as the speaker waits to learn what the morning will bring.

The “cloud of unknowing” suggests a state of confusion or uncertainty, where the speaker cannot see clearly what will happen or how the other person feels. Satellites watching may represent the feeling of being observed, or simply a modern image that contrasts with the speaker’s private longing. The tide carries the days away, while being “lost at sea” suggests feeling directionless. The image of sunshine arriving on the morning’s wings gives hope a gentle, almost birdlike form.

The lyrics do not explain why the two people are distant, or whether the speaker’s love is returned. “Someone you’ll never know” could mean a person who remains emotionally unreachable, or someone the speaker has not yet met. Likewise, the final hope may be genuine optimism, or only a wish held onto during a difficult wait. The song balances longing and uncertainty rather than offering a clear resolution.
