Lyrics meaning

The speaker begins by feeling proud of the money and possessions he has collected. As he reflects, though, he recognizes that he has overlooked something more important: the person he loves. The mood shifts from self-satisfaction and regret toward appreciation of love as a deeper kind of wealth.

โ€œSilver and goldโ€ stand for material riches, while โ€œearthly treasureโ€ suggests possessions that belong to this life. The speaker says his fortune was โ€œuntold,โ€ meaning it was very great, but calls himself a fool for idealizing it: he gave money more value than it deserved. By contrast, calling his loved one a treasure โ€œunmeasuredโ€ suggests that this personโ€™s worth cannot be counted or priced.

The final lines introduce a spiritual idea as well as a romantic one. โ€œTreasures that come from aboveโ€ may refer to blessings from God or to spiritual riches, and the speaker admits that worldly wealth cannot provide the heart of someone he loves. The wording is somewhat unclear: the repeated phrase โ€œmy treasure unmeasuredโ€ sits beside โ€œforsaken,โ€ which could suggest that the speaker has neglected higher blessings, or that his material riches have left him without what matters most. Either way, the lyrics contrast possessions with love and invite the listener to question what true wealth means.
