Lyrics meaning
The speaker presents himself as a hunted, rootless gunman who expects his life to end violently. He sounds defiant, but also tired and reflective: he wonders whether he will grow old, remembers love ending in pain, and prays before sleep. As the song develops, his bravado becomes a request to face death on his own terms, with dignity rather than fear.
Several images make his situation vivid. Sleeping with the earth as his bed and an old coat for a pillow suggests homelessness and hardship. Calling himself โa candle in the windโ implies that his life is fragile and could be extinguished at any moment. A โblaze of gloryโ means a dramatic, conspicuous ending; here, it describes the death he imagines in a final gunfight. His line about not drawing first but drawing first blood also suggests a complicated claim: he may see himself as reacting to trouble, while admitting that he has caused harm.
The speakerโs self-image is deliberately contradictory. He calls himself a โdevil,โ yet prays and asks God for a favor; he rejects forgiveness, but still wants to be understood. His insistence that he is โno oneโs sonโ can suggest independence or emotional isolation, though it may also be a boast. The lyrics do not settle whether he is truly brave, trying to excuse violence, or both.
