Lyrics meaning

The lyrics portray poor women living on the margins of city life, moving through the streets and finding brief, uncertain relationships. At first, the chorus sounds defiantly carefree: the women claim they do not care that nobody loves them or that they have no money. As the song continues, however, their situation becomes darker. They face arrest, poverty, isolation, and death, while the refrain’s bravado starts to feel like a shield against suffering.

Several images make their hardship vivid. “Without a penny in their pocket” points to constant poverty, while the streetlights and grand, fashionable women’s names contrast with their dirty clothes and limited choices. The image of being “fished out” by a police officer suggests arrest, and the canal and funeral procession show how desperate their lives have become. The repeated comparison to dolls or puppets can imply that society sees them as objects rather than as people with feelings.

The chorus insists, “We don’t care,” but the lyrics give us reasons to doubt that this is the whole truth. Their words may express genuine defiance, yet they may also hide hurt and loneliness. The song’s slang and blunt descriptions make the women sound lively and outspoken, even as the narrative exposes the cruelty of poverty and public judgment. The ending is especially ambiguous: calling death their “best day” could be dark sarcasm, a sign of despair, or both.
