Wildfire

The song tells of a woman who dies in a winter storm while searching for her runaway pony, Wildfire. The speaker then describes signs of another harsh winter and imagines that the woman is coming to take him away on the pony. The mood moves from a sad, distant story to a personal longing for escape.

The “killing frost” and blizzard make the winter feel dangerous and powerful, while Wildfire’s escape from the stall suggests an untamed force that cannot be held back. The repeated owl calls and early snow seem to the speaker like warnings—or messages—that the woman is near. “Sodbustin’” refers to the exhausting work of breaking and farming the prairie soil; leaving it behind means escaping labor and hardship.

The final ride can be read as a dream of freedom from difficult times, but it also has a darker possibility: the speaker may be welcoming death, joining the woman in the afterlife. The lyrics do not explain exactly what he believes, so the ride remains both hopeful and haunting.
