Lyrics
Since my baby left me
I found a new place to dwell
Down at the end of Lonely Street
Heartbreak Hotel
Oh, feelin' so lonely, baby
Feelin' so lonely, baby
Feelin' so lonely, baby
I could die
The bellhop is crying
The desk clerk's dressed in black
They've been gone on Lonely Street
They never will get back
'Cause they're
Feelin' so lonely, baby
Feelin' so lonely, baby
Feelin' so lonely, baby
They could die
If your baby leaves you
And you have a tale to tell
Just take a walk down Lonely Street
Straight to Heartbreak Hotel
You could be so lonely
And I could be so lonely
We could all be so lonely
We could dieAll right, we're gonna, we're gonna play an old track by
Bauhaus which, uh, I hope you will enjoy. This is, uh, "The Passion
Of Lovers", which I still think sounds as new as it did when it was
Originally minted. Sort of "fades in quietly" as Mr. Peel would say
"The Passion of Lovers" from Bauhaus. I'm quite horrified to discover
That that came out in 1981, which seems like another age
Really. We're talking to Daniel Ash about his new band
Tones on Tail, which in case people haven't seen, um, sort
Of engineer's jargon for the way they store tapes on reels
That's where they put the sort of reference tones, whistles
Isn't it? They say the tones are on the tail of the tape
That's where we got the name of the band
You were literally searching around and
There it was in front of you, isn't it?
Uh, yes, yeah, that was to do with, uh, Derek Tompkins
Who works in Wellingborough, who we use a lot, but we've
Always used him with Bauhaus. And, uh, he just put on
The end of one of the reels that, uh, the tones were on
The tail. So we said, "Ah, it's for a band, Tones on Tail."
Right, you're working, we haven't given them all
Name checks, with Kevin Haskins, a name from
The past as we can say, also Glen Campling who...
The famous Glen Campling
The famous, the famous roadie, Glen Campling, it says
Yeah, he doesn't like being called that, actually, the roadie
For how long has Glen been performing
Rather than humping things around?
Performing, well he hasn't actually performed yet. I mean, uh...
He's in the other room, I've got a feeling
He has, he has, he's never done a live gig, but, um
We're hoping to start in May rather than April, which is
All the adverts are going out for us being on tour in April
But in actual fact it's had to be postponed until May
What, to get it right, basically?
Uh, no, not for us, it's just, uh, a bit of a mix-up with the agency
That we're going with that, uh, are doing the, they're doing the tour
All right, so ignore...
Glen prefers to be called, um, Glen the bass player or synth
Player. And former roadie. He's got a bit of an ego, probably
How come Kevin, uh, is involved, how come Kevin is involved in
This project? Was that a natural move from the end of Bauhaus?
Well, he's, he's just, uh, he's just got a pretty face
Really, and I mean that's the main sort of asset
I mean, we need to sell the band, and if anybody's
Going to sell it, I think it's Kevin with his pretty face
I think this is wonderful. You've obviously relaxed a little now
Because, uh, we must say, during, during that record, we were
Discussing the fact that now the spotlight is, um, hard and
Square on your face, are you finding it, uh, a little bit odd?
Oh yeah, I can't cope with it. But, uh, yeah, carry on
All right, I'll ask you a question while the spotlight's
On you. Is, is Tones on Tail gonna represent any
Sort of drastic, uh, change in direction for you?
Uh, no, I think really it's a continuation rather than a change. Uh
We just, many of the things that we felt, uh, that we, our
Convictions in the past with Bauhaus are continuing
With Tones on Tail anyway. And, uh, the only
Difference is there's a slightly different line-up
So it's quite, it's quite likely that if Bauhaus had continued, it
Might well have been doing some of
The sort of material you're doing now
Uh, who knows, who knows, he whispers. Yes, maybe. I think some of the
Tracks could have been used for, for Bauhaus, uh, particularly tracks
Like "War". But, uh, yeah, we're just hoping to continue the same
Sort of theme as with Bauhaus to a degree. But
Obviously it's going to change to a certain degree
Because of different people being involved
Right, as he kicks the table in the background, I wonder, you know
Image and presentation were a very important part of the
The whole Bauhaus package, and I assume that's going to continue
Uh, do you?
Has it worked out, has it been worked out
You know, exactly how you will present it?
Um, well basically instead of black, we're, we're just going into
A negative of that and we're using white. Just, uh, not necessarily
As a reaction towards that, I think Bauhaus was very relevant
For the time. But now, uh, I don't know why, but, uh, white
Seems to be the colour. I think it's probably because it's spring
Well, a young man's fancies. Are you still the dominant person
In this band? As you were at the end of Bauhaus or whatever?
Oh, I don't know about that
I mean, are you, are you, as they always say, calling the shots?
No, no. Um, well I write the words, but, uh, I don't think that's
Necessarily more important than the music itself anyway. I think I
Should give, you know, as much credit to Kevin and Glen as well for
Actually producing the music. I just stick some words on top of it
All right, what are your immediate plans now?
Uh, the immediate plans, the immediate plans are to go on tour
In May, not April as advertised, because of various problems
And as far as records are concerned?
As far as records are concerned, big pun, uh, we've got a new single
Coming out probably in about three weeks' time
And, uh, we can't actually say what it is, but
Kevin Haskins is just running into the room...
I see Kevin Haskins!
Kevin Haskins
The pretty face, as he said, the beautiful face
I mean, look, all he needs is a moustache
That's it, you took the words out of my mouth
Anyway, this is a cryptic clue to the next single
A small excerpt from a cautionary tale
Okay
And hidden inside the title of it is a clue to...
Hello spider
Oh yes, I see
Is a clue to, uh, the title of the next single, and it goes something
Like this. There's a famous seaside town called Blackpool that's
Noted for fresh air and fun, and Mr. and Mrs. Ramsbottom went there
With young Albert, their son. A grand little lad were young Albert
All dressed in his best, quite a swell, with a stick with an oyster's
Head handle. Can I advertise? The finest that Woolworths could sell
But, that's enough, I think, because I'll waffle on for ages
Here is a hint
It's about four minutes long, the actual poem
Live performances will get the entire
Version of Albert and the Lion, will they?
Maybe
Along that way. Gentlemen, thank you, both of you, for
Coming in today. Um, we'll play a track that I believe
Is not going to be the next single. This is "Real Life"
