The lyrics tell a story across two generations. A grandson learns how his grandparents planned to run away together, then hears the same loving promise as his grandfather faces his wife’s death. The feeling moves from youthful romance and uncertainty to grief, but the promise of love connects the two moments and offers comfort.

The note left on a tree is an image of a meeting that almost happened: the lovers miss each other, yet the message lets them remain emotionally close. “Chores” suggests that the grandmother must finish her everyday duties before she can meet him; in the later scene, it can also sound like a gentle way to speak about the end of life. “If you get there before I do” imagines death as two people arriving at a place at different times.

The song presents love as lasting through separation, but it does not explain exactly what the promised reunion means. It may be understood as hope for meeting again after death, or simply as the grandfather’s way of expressing devotion when words are difficult. The grandson’s tears and the grandfather’s tears show how a private note becomes a family memory, carrying affection forward.
