Still

The speaker describes a love that continues after a painful separation. Although the other person broke their heart and is now far away, the speaker says they still love them and think about them. The emotion moves between grief and hope: the speaker has lost much since the person left, yet holds on to memories and the possibility of reunion.

Several images make this lasting attachment vivid. The “flame” in the speaker’s heart suggests a love that remains alive and even grows stronger, while tears cannot put it out. “Carry this torch” means continuing to love or wait for someone, often despite little certainty that they will return. The song the speaker has written is also imagined as a message that might reach the absent person wherever they are.

The speaker’s devotion can sound tender, but also painful and possibly unrealistic: they admit their friends think they are “crazy,” and they do not know where the former partner is or whom they are with. Still, the lyrics do not tell us whether the absent person might come home or whether the speaker’s hope is wise. “Still” expresses both enduring affection and the difficulty of letting go.
