Young Molly was a farmer's daughter
Beautiful and bold
Her parents died and left her
With five hundred pounds in gold
So she lived with her uncle
And a wicked man was he
She lived a life of sorrow
In the banks of Sweet Dundee
Then she met young William
Who ploughed her uncle's land
They laughed and smiled together
And her heart began to mend
They fell in love so deeply
And lived a life so free
Until her uncle heard the news
On the banks of Sweet Dundee
Her uncle went riding
With a man of high renown
A wealthy square
Who wanted Molly's beauty for his own
Her uncle said: "Young Molly's hand
In marriage yours will be"
"She'll be your bride and lady kind
On the banks of Sweet Dundee"
Next morning Molly's uncle knocked
Upon her bedroom door
"Rise up rise up young Molly
Your lonely heart will soar
For I have found a wealthy squire
Who longs to marry the
So soon you shall be wedded
On the banks of Sweet Dundee"
" I care not for your wealthy sqires
Your lords or dukes likewise
My William appeared to me
Like a diamond in the sky"
"Begone then!" said her uncle
"You ne'er shall happy be
For I will vanish William
From the banks of Sweet Dundee"
The sqire's men found William
When he was all alone
He bravely fought for liberty
But they were ten to one
They struck him with a mortal blow
That brought him to his knees
His blood flowed down into the ground
On the banks of Sweet Dundee
When Molly heard her love was dead
It fire her heart in two
She faced the wealthy squire
Who had brought to her the news
He put his arms around her
"Stand off right now" said she
"You've slain the only man I love
On the banks of Sweet Dundee"
He ok his arms around her then
To throw her to the ground
A pistol and a sword she spied
Beneath his morning gown
She quickly free the pistol
That he had used so free
Then she did fire and shot the sword
On the banks of Sweet Dundee
Her uncle overheard the noise
And hastened to the ground
"Well since you so desire it girl
I'll give you your death now"
He thrust his knife at Molly
But undaunted she would be
Then the pistol drew and her uncle does
On the banks of Sweet Dundee
Wounded by her uncle's knife
She staggered to the grove
Where William lay slain
And she laid down beside her love
"Oh William, my love" said she
"Will I at last be free?"
She closed her eyes no more to guide
On the banks of Sweet Dundee
