Città vuota

The speaker is surrounded by busy streets and people, yet feels lonely because the person she loves is absent. Others talk, laugh, and offer her company, but none of this comforts her. Her feelings move from describing this emptiness to pleading for the loved one to return, with hope that they can share their lives again.

The “empty city” is an image for loneliness: the streets may be full, but without this person they seem deserted to the speaker. Seeing the loved one’s name “everywhere” suggests that thoughts of them shape how she experiences her surroundings; it need not mean the name is literally written all over the city. The offer of other people’s kisses implies that affection from someone else cannot replace the relationship she misses.

The speaker asks how the other person can live alone and insists that their love has not ended. These lines may express sincere confidence, but they also reveal a wish: she hopes the other person feels the same and will come back. The lyrics do not tell us why they are apart or whether the reunion will happen. The repeated promise of living together “all my days” sounds hopeful, but the song’s emotional center remains longing and uncertainty.
