The Worst

The speaker warns someone not to stay with him, describing himself as a bad partner who may cause them pain. Yet he also says his heart is true and that he would never let them down, creating a tension between affection and self-condemnation. The song feels regretful: he seems to believe the relationship is doomed, while still caring about the person.

“Take all the pain” and “put the blame on me” suggest that he accepts responsibility for the hurt in the relationship. “I threw love aside” is an image of rejecting or neglecting love, as if it were something he could discard. The repeated warning that he is “the worst kind of guy” may be a blunt way of saying, “You deserve better,” rather than a literal claim that he is entirely bad.

There is some ambiguity in how to read his warning. He may be trying to protect the other person from future pain, but he may also be expressing guilt after already damaging the relationship. His claim that his heart is true complicates the picture: he can care sincerely and still feel unable—or unwilling—to be a reliable partner.
