I'd like to say a little something here
I'd like to tell a little story for you
Hope you like it
John Henry was a railroad man
He was working from six to five
When he was on the job
The men would talk him down
"I will beat you to the bottom or die"
"I will beat you to the bottom or die"
John Henry said to his captain
"You ain't nothing but a crummy man
But 'fore I fall for that steel and drift and put me down
I will die with a hammer in my hand, oh Lord
I will die with a hammer in my hand"
John Henry said to the shaker
"You must listen to my call
Before the bass string tears and beats me down
I will drive you in my mouth 'til you fall
I will drive you in my mouth 'til you fall"
John Henry said to the captain
"You will find fifty dollars in your hand
And let it hang just on the forehead, sir
'Cause it belonged to a steel driving man"
That's me
"I belong to a steel driving man"
I have one more here, I just want to share this with you right now
It's a little love story, it's a
Little love story that's involved here
John Henry had a little woman
Her name was Polly Ann
He said to her just before he died
"Polly, do the best you can, yeah
Polly, do the best you can"
Oh, no, no, no, no
Polly, do the best you can
I said, Polly, do the best you can, no, no
Polly, do the best you can
Polly, do the best you can
