In Maricopa County
Where the wind blows wild and free
A man can live how he wants to live
Be who he wants to be
He can be the man he is
When folks are looking
Or the one he won't let them see
ย
This land is full of secrets
This land has seen it all
The Apache and the antelope
Walmarts and strip malls
Folks all say this used to be a good town
Weren't they all?
ย
But everyone wants someone else to blame
In Maricopa County
ย
Hank lived in Maricopa County all his life
Owned a hardware store on Main Street
Since he lost his wife
He'd close up at odd hours
I'd see him driving 'round all night
ย
Then two girls from my high school
Disappeared in May
Took a shortcut home one night
Fell off the earth along the way
And I can still see those two empty chairs
On graduation day
ย
Now everyone wants someone else to blame
In Maricopa County
ย
Some kids on bikes found Hank in an arroyo south of town
His mouth all filled with dust and dirt
His hands and both feet bound
The sheriff told my daddy it was suicide
But I still don't see how
ย
Me, I've got the lunch crowd
Weekends at El Rey
But things don't feel the same
Since the Ford plant moved away
Mostly I just sit here wishing
I could forget all about this place
ย
But everyone wants someone else to blame
In Maricopa County
