We write to you brothers
What relates to our teacher's fate
Ending the persecution
Sealed by his noble death
When his pursuers came
He set supper for them
Until the time to leave
He didn't cease to pray
They marveled at his constancy and age
"Was so much effort made to seize a righteous man?"
-"Swear by the fortune of Lord Caesar
And repent your ways"
-"It's unfit to repent righteousness
In the fire without motion, I'll remain
Needlessly bind me with nails
I must be burnt alive"
As the flame blazed
It shaped around our friend
From his body, a sweet odor came
That of smoking frankincense
Sharp dagger in hand
Pierced through came blessed Polycarp's end
A blameless life he led
Crowned and praised in death
-"Swear by the fortune of Lord Caesar
And repent your ways"
-"It's unfit to repent righteousness
In the fire without motion, I'll remain
Needlessly bind me with nails
I must be burnt alive"
"Eighty and six years have I served Him
And He never did me wrong
How then can I now blaspheme my King
My Savior?"
