Several images express these feelings. “Heaven on earth” presents love as a source of extraordinary happiness, while walking alone through afternoon traffic places the speaker amid everyday life but emotionally apart from it. The “ocean of teardrops” is an exaggeration that makes grief feel vast enough to carry the speaker away. The lyrics also say that people who have “kissed in the rain” or “stood in the light” need no explanation: these moments seem to stand for experiences whose emotional meaning is felt directly.

The repeated claim that love “never really happens at all” is intentionally difficult to take literally, since the speaker has just described loving and losing someone.
