Son Of Your Father

The lyrics tell a tense story about Van Bushell, who wants to leave a farm but is stopped by Joseph, a blind man carrying a shotgun. Van tries to calm him by appealing to fairness, family duty, and kindness. For a moment, Joseph lowers the gun, but Van’s dismissive manner seems to renew the conflict. The mood shifts from cautious negotiation to a grim warning about the danger of trusting appearances.

Several images carry meaning beyond the immediate scene. The “son of your father” refrain suggests that Van should behave as his father would, treating another person as family; it may also sound like a moral lesson imposed on him. By contrast, the gun, the missing hand, and the two dead men make the farm a place where injury and violence are close at hand. “Refresh your mind” is a pointed way of telling Van to remember the danger he is in.
