Lyrics meaning
The lyrics contrast a grim story told to the public with a narratorโs claim to have seen a brighter world. The opening describes a missing man returning home after being robbed and released, relieved to see his children. Then the focus shifts to the narrator, who longs to share what they have witnessed but is told, in effect, to keep it secret. The emotional movement is from a matter-of-fact account toward hope, frustration, and resignation.
โKeep it darkโ suggests hiding good news or keeping the truth out of sight, not simply making a place unlit. The โworld of nightโ is a made-up, bleak story offered instead of the narratorโs vision of joyful people, peaceful cities, and happier creatures. โCities of lightโ can suggest safety, hope, or openness, especially beside the fear of war.
It is unclear why the narrator must lie, or who is asking them to conceal what they saw. The bright world may be a literal place in the songโs imagined setting, or an ideal vision of a kinder future. Either way, the repeated command makes the ending feel uneasy: hope is present, but so is pressure to hide it. The lyrics leave open whether the narrator accepts that demand or resists it by continuing to speak.
