The lyrics create a playful, unsettled scene around a character addressed as Cosmic Charlie. The speaker greets him, asks for news, and seems to invite him to return, but also repeats that his mother is calling him home. Between these greetings and farewells, the mood shifts from jaunty and colorful to impatient and uncertain: people and events keep moving, yet everything feels slow, and the speaker does not know what will happen next.

Several images suggest delay and uncertain movement. A “paper canoe” sounds fragile and makeshift, while a kite waiting for wind cannot go anywhere until conditions change. The airplane that “happens to land” also makes a return seem dependent on chance, not a firm plan. Bright colors and the noisy “calliope” add a carnival-like feeling, though the song’s odd, playful wording does not settle into a clear story.

One possible reading is that Charlie is caught between freedom and the pull of home, while the speaker waits for a connection that may or may not resume. The repeated “How do you do?” sounds like a simple social greeting, but its contrast with “Go home” gives the ending a push-pull quality: welcome and dismissal coexist. Some lines are deliberately nonsensical or elusive, so it may be better to hear the song as a collage of images and moods than as a message with one definite meaning.
