Lyrics meaning

The song tells a grim, ironic story about a king’s fool who loves the queen. After seeing her being courted by a handsome count, he leaves in sorrow, then returns and tells the king what he saw. The king laughs, rewards the count, and orders the fool hanged. The story moves from the fool’s quiet devotion to heartbreak, and ends with a sudden, cruel punishment.

The repeated refrain celebrates “hunchbacks” and “the hanged,” pairing a possibly comic-sounding chant with the story’s violence. That contrast makes the refrain feel less like simple cheer and more like dark mockery. The fool goes into the woods “to cry from shame”: his pain is real, but the word “shame” may suggest he feels exposed or foolish for loving the queen.

The ending is deliberately unsettling. The fool appears to speak truthfully, yet the king’s laughter and the count’s reward suggest that honesty does not protect someone with little power. The song does not explain why the king chooses to hang him, so the act may seem arbitrary, or like a harsh response to the fool’s report. The repeated refrain can sound playful, bitter, or resigned, leaving the listener to decide how to hear it.
