Pillbox Tales

The lyrics create a tense, disorienting mood, moving between images of danger, pain, and memory. The repeated invitation to “step inside and listen” offers a kind of shelter: the speaker presents the “pillbox tales” as stories to enter when the outside world feels overwhelming. Yet the song does not clearly promise comfort; its refrain sits beside unsettling scenes.

Several images suggest pressure and vulnerability. “Racing time” and “running much too fast” imply a life moving faster than someone can manage. A “killing ground” makes the surroundings seem hostile, while “it makes you look so small” conveys helplessness. The figure on the television who is “never coming back” may suggest a lost person, a vanished public image, or simply a painful memory that cannot be restored.

The lyrics also connect looking backward with feeling unwell: someone is “living out the past,” yet seems sick from moving too quickly and wishing to be elsewhere or in another time. “Pillbox tales” could mean private, protective stories—perhaps small containers for memories or ways of coping—but the phrase remains open to interpretation. The song may be about escaping pain through recollection, while hinting that neither escape nor the past can fully bring relief.
