Lyrics meaning

The speaker imagines his final meal as a gathering of the people, animals, food, and pleasures that have filled his life. He wants to celebrate loudly and freely, then be left alone to face death. The mood moves from appetite and defiance toward quietness and fear: even someone who jokes about dying admits that the end is frightening.

Several images make this movement clear. The hill is a place from which he watches the evening fade; its sinking horizon suggests life drawing to a close. Burning childhood memories, unfinished dreams, and hope in his pipe imagines letting go of the past. The rose and a woman’s name are the few things he wants to keep, perhaps symbols of beauty and love. His insults toward God and the bourgeoisie express rebellion, while the bawdy songs show his taste for earthy pleasure.

The song can be read as a comic, irreverent farewell, but the humor does not erase its tenderness or vulnerability. The speaker seems to want control over the rituals of his departure, choosing company, food, and even his last acts of protest. Yet his final admission of fear complicates that bravado. The lyrics do not settle whether he believes in an afterlife; instead, they focus on the human wish to meet death on one’s own terms.
