Lyrics meaning
The lyrics recall childhood at school as a time when some teachers used their power to hurt and humiliate pupils. The feeling moves from fear and exposure to anger, then to dark, almost comic satisfaction when the teachers are described as suffering at home. The title sounds cheerful, but the words suggest that these โhappiest daysโ were not happy for the children.
โPouring their derisionโ means directing mockery or contempt at the children, as if scorn were a liquid being poured over them. The teachersโ exposure of โevery weaknessโ suggests that they made private insecurities public. The final image, of the teachers being beaten โwithin inches of their lives,โ is an extreme expression for being hurt very badly; it also creates a shocking reversal, since the people who seemed powerful at school are powerless at home.
The ending may be read as revenge imagined by people who were once bullied, rather than as a calm or realistic account. Its exaggerated, harsh humor can make the teachersโ cruelty seem to come back on them, but it does not erase the childrenโs pain. The lyrics leave some uncertainty about whether the townโs story is meant to be taken literally or as bitter gossip.
