Fire Brigade

The song describes a speaker’s growing fascination with a girl he knew at school. At first, the memory is playful: she would firmly stop him when he touched her. Later, he seems surprised by his stronger feelings and tries to act calm, even though his friends laugh and he admits his eyes have been misty. The mood shifts from teasing recollection to excitement mixed with vulnerability.

The repeated image of the girl “setting the place on fire” suggests that she has a powerful effect on the speaker, not that anything is literally burning. The fire brigade becomes a humorous way to express how overwhelming this attraction feels. The rainbow in her hair, made by lights across the street, gives a brief, vivid picture of her as the speaker sees her. “Play it cool” means to hide one’s excitement, while “wait your turn” may suggest that others are also interested in her, or that the speaker should not rush.

The lyrics leave some details unclear. The misty eyes might point to sadness, emotional intensity, or simply the speaker being moved; the song does not explain why. Likewise, the line about taking turns could be playful competition rather than a serious claim. Overall, the song presents attraction as exciting and slightly confusing, while keeping its tone light and youthful.
