Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst)

The lyrics begin with a carefully prepared space mission: the crew is tense, the countdown proceeds, and Major Tom eases the pressure with a joke. Once the spacecraft leaves Earth, everything seems to work perfectly. The mood then shifts when the control center discovers that the capsule is off course and cannot reach him. Tom’s isolation grows, and his final radio message sounds like a farewell, though the ending leaves his fate uncertain.

“Völlig losgelöst” means completely detached or released. Literally, Tom is free from Earth’s gravity; figuratively, the phrase can suggest separation from ordinary life and human ties. The Earth “shimmering blue” is a striking image of beauty seen from far away, while “Grüßt mir meine Frau” (“Give my regards to my wife”) makes the vast distance suddenly personal. His claim that a light is guiding him may suggest hope, an unknown experience, or a private explanation for what is happening.

The lyrics can be heard as both an exciting space adventure and a story of disconnection. Tom seems calm, perhaps even fascinated, while people below panic and mourn; calling them “egoists” may show his bitterness or his feeling that they cannot understand him. His promise to return contrasts with the coldness he feels and the loss of contact. The song does not clearly establish whether he is confident, confused, or accepting a destiny he cannot control.
