The lyrics describe someone moving forward after a brief moment of disconnection or uncertainty. A familiar song seems to remain inside the speaker, and a few steps bring a realization: life’s path will be difficult, but it contains more than hardship. The repeated refrain gives the song a determined, encouraging mood, while the verses acknowledge that progress may involve loneliness and change.

The “road” stands for a person’s journey through life, not just a literal walk. Calling it “stony and hard” suggests obstacles and struggle. The “key to this door” may imply readiness to enter a new stage or understand something about oneself. Later, the image of setting a sail while the sea grows rough suggests continuing onward even when circumstances become turbulent.

The lyrics also recognize that people can affect us in very different ways: some hurt us, some love us, and some make sacrifices for us. “You won’t agree with many” suggests that finding people who share your views may be difficult, rather than that everyone is an enemy. The brief moment when the speaker was “not there” is unclear; it could mean distraction, shock, or a personal turning point. The song does not explain the cause, leaving the focus on what follows: taking another step and seeing life as worthwhile despite uncertainty.
