Silver Dagger

The speaker rejects a lover’s song because her mother is nearby and forbids the marriage. The mother’s warning shapes the speaker’s decision: although there may be affection between the couple, she chooses caution over romance. The mood moves from a secretive, tense moment to a firm, sorrowful resolve to remain alone.

The silver dagger is an image of the mother’s strong, perhaps threatening authority; it may also suggest how serious the danger of disobeying her feels to the speaker. The father’s chain, stretched for miles and decorated with broken hearts, is an exaggerated picture of a man who has hurt many women. “Pine and sigh” means to suffer with longing after being abandoned.

The lyrics leave open whether the mother’s warnings are wise protection or fearful overgeneralization. The father’s behavior gives the warning some support, but the speaker seems to apply it to all men, deciding that no relationship is worth the risk. Her final choice may sound strong and self-protective, yet also lonely: the song does not tell us whether she will keep this promise or whether it reflects a decision made under pressure.
