Rode out of this forgotten town
Had to watch my old horse drown
Buried by the river
Chocolate colored by the mud
When we young we were judged
By the choices that we made
And all the time we wasted and the love
The love that I betrayed
Well
They built the dam and everything changed
Little houses huddled on the range
Fear came rolling in
And covered up the sun
In the land of milk and honey
That's where I laid my claim
But every day that I lost money
It brought me closer to the grave
Where the river don't flow
Where the grass don't grow
Preacher had a cross to bear
He smelled salvation in the air
Tempted by the silver and gold
Put him six feet in the ground
I came across her by the road
Dressed in her Sunday best
She took my hand and led me home
To the place, the place I can't forget
Where the river don't flow
Where the grass don't grow
ย
Living in a makeshift tent
Couldn't find money for the rent
Do you believe in the kingdom to come
And the promise of the word
In the land of milk and honey
That's where I laid my claim
But every day that I lost money
It brought me closer to the grave
Where the river don't flow
Where the grass don't grow
Where the river don't flow
Where the grass don't grow
