On the fourteenth day of April of 1935
There struck the worst of dust storms that ever filled the sky
You could see that dust storm coming
The sky looked a death-like black
Throughout our mighty nation, it left a terrible track
From Denver, Colorado to the old Arizona line
We thought it was our judgment, we thought it was our time
Well, the radio reported as we listened with alarm
To the wild and windy action of the great mysterious storm
From Oklahoma City to the shores of the Rio Grande
They said that they could hold out, they did not know how long
ย
Well, my relatives were huddled inside of their orphan shacks
And the children, they were crying as the storm whispered at the crack
The storm began at sundown and it lasted through the night
When we awoke next morning, we saw a terrible sight
It had covered up our fences, all the crops that we had grown
Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown
Well, we piled our jalopies, said goodbye to all our friends
And wandered off down that highway, never to return again
Oh, never to return again
