Lyrics
The academy of football
The academy of football
The academy of football
The academy of football
Now then, this is the moment
This is the moment
Billy Bonds comes to the bottom of the steps
He's got 39 steps to walk up and everyone
Is paved with gold for Billy Bonds
Bonds reaches the 39th step
He turns, the cup is now in the arms of Billy Bonds
And Billy Bonds lifts the cup and the sun shines on the cup
And it's got blue ribbons on it
The moving sea of blue which means West Ham
It means I'm forever blowing bubbles
The ball breaks and the buccaneer figure of Billy
Bonds, the captain of West Ham, picks it up quick
Checks with his right foot, turns it square to Brooking
Brooking takes the ball over the top
A first time effort for Billy Bonds
Applause from the West Ham supporters
And a good tackle coming in from Bonds
And Bonds comes forward again, all he needs is a rapier and
Rings in his ears and he really is a pirate extraordinary
And Bonds controls it delicately, precisely and nicely
And Bonds has it, he plays it down the line
Professional footballer Billy Bonds is
The latest member of the British Empire
At 41, Bonds is the oldest professional in
A league where most have finished at 30
He's played for 24 years where most play 5
There is no way to cheat to get this record
You do it slugging out the daily training
And if it's cold and wet then you slug it out in the cold and wet
There's a lot of argument about honours
Their worth and who should win them
In London yesterday there were many who think the Queen got it right
Honouring a bus mechanic's son who left school at 15
To play football, something he does with distinction
