The lyrics humorously describe a young man trying to seem fashionable and confident, even though others think he is awkward and out of touch. He copies styles he associates with being cool, but his efforts do not quite work. The tone is teasing, yet the repeated celebration of โwannabesโ suggests that people who try too hard are also part of the fun.
Several details make the joke concrete. He buys Vanilla Iceโs music when he cannot find Ice Cubeโs, showing that he confuses or misreads the style he wants to imitate. His tattoo is meant to say โ13โ but comes out as โ31,โ turning his attempt at looking edgy into another mistake. โOvercompensateโ means doing something extra to hide a weakness or insecurity; here, his bold image may cover up his lack of confidence.
The song pokes fun at imitation and denial, especially the gap between how the young man sees himself and how others see him. But it does not simply condemn him: he seems happy in his own mind, and the lyrics say the world โneedsโ or โlovesโ wannabes. That ending can sound affectionate as well as sarcastic, leaving open whether the song is laughing at him, enjoying his enthusiasm, or doing both.
