Lyrics meaning

The lyrics contrast the urgency of a battlefield with the Colonel’s private longing. Soldiers repeatedly ask what to do as morning comes, the enemy appears, and the Colonel is wounded. Yet he seems absorbed in thoughts of his beloved rather than in giving orders. The mood shifts from playful impatience to tenderness and, finally, grief, as the Colonel dies while separated from her.

Several images make this contrast vivid. He “plucks” petals from a flower, suggesting a familiar way of wondering whether someone loves you, while also showing how little attention he gives to the military crisis. The repeated questions about drums, guns, and marching make the soldiers’ need for action sound almost comic beside his daydreaming. His wound is described as being “in the heart”: this can mean emotional heartbreak, but the lyrics also connect love and physical death.

The ending makes the story intimate. The Colonel imagines seeing his beloved and reaching toward her; “entering heaven” may suggest death, a vision, or a final dream. The closing comparison reveals that the Colonel’s separation from his lover reflects the speaker’s own heart being far from someone. The song can therefore be heard both as a humorous portrait of a distracted officer and as a sincere expression of longing and loss.
