Lyrics meaning

The song describes someone who feels life improving over time, especially since a close relationship began. At first, the speaker remembers frustration with school and a rebellious, angry attitude. Later, the mood becomes more hopeful: he says he is listening, trying, and changing. But the improvement is gradual, not presented as perfect or complete.

Several phrases show this change. โ€œHiding my head in the sandโ€ means avoiding problems instead of facing them. โ€œYou gave me the word, I finally heardโ€ suggests that another personโ€™s advice or care helped the speaker pay attention and reconsider his behavior. The repeated claim that things are โ€œgetting betterโ€ gives the song an upbeat, encouraging rhythm, while โ€œa little betterโ€ makes the progress sound modest and ongoing.

The final verse makes the speakerโ€™s change more serious: he admits to having been violent and controlling toward his partner. Saying he is โ€œdoing the best that I canโ€ signals effort, but it does not erase the harm he describes, and the lyrics do not explain whether he has fully changed or made amends. The song can therefore sound joyful while also leaving room for doubt: improvement matters, but a personโ€™s claim to be better is not the same as proof that past damage has been repaired.
