When I read of water split in two
Wind-walled waves and the midnight hue
Pharaoh's fury swallowed whole
By the breath of the Shepherd's soul
That wasn't myth and desert sand
That was Christ with a lifted hand
Speaking still from crimson thread
Through the words the prophets read
When I read of rain that drowned the land
Ark afloat by sovereign hand
Judgment falling, mercy sealed
Rainbow covenant revealed
That wasn't wrath without a face
That was blood preparing grace
Timber groaning, floodgates torn
Preaching Christ before He's born
He said, "Have you not heard what God said to you?
Have you not heard what the pages do?
Ink and fire, breath and bone
Not dead letters carved in stone"
He speaks to me when the Red Sea parts
He speaks to me through broken hearts
He speaks to me in flood and flame
Every page still bears His name
He speaks to me in bloodstained bread
In living Word that raised the dead
He speaks to me, and it ain't just read
It's the risen Christ instead
When I read of manna on the ground
Bread from heaven, desert-bound
Forty years of hunger stilled
By unseen mercy daily filled
That was more than flakes of white
That was promise signed in rife
Broken bread and lifted cup
Sign and shadow pointing up
When I read of sling and stone
Giant mocked and overthrown
Shepherd boy with trembling breath
Trusting God in face of death
That was Christ in smaller frame
Bearing shame and bearing blame
One true King in humble bled
Bruised but striking serpent's head
Have you not read what God declared?
Have you not seen how Christ was there?
Burning bush and ram and rod
Every line is breathing God
He speaks to me when the Red Sea parts
He speaks to me through shattered hearts
He speaks to me in flood and flame
Every page still bears His name
He speaks to me on Calvary's hill
Through torn veil and broken will
He speaks to me, it's Christ indeed
The living Word my soul will heed
