Lyrics meaning

The speaker tells an absent loved one not to worry because everything is unchanged. Yet the details reveal deep grief: the home feels cold, the children ask for their mother, and the speaker is often crying. The repeated claim that nothing is new becomes increasingly sad, because life has changed profoundly even as the speaker tries to sound calm.

Several images make the loss visible. The dried-up fountain and dead canary suggest that the home has lost its vitality. The rosebush no longer flowering echoes the end of love and hope. Familiar belongings—the sandals, robe, and pictures—remain in place, making the loved one’s absence feel present in every room. The mirror, however, shows what has changed: the speaker’s tired face and new wrinkles.

The lyrics may be read as both a message to the absent person and an attempt to hide pain, perhaps even from the speaker themself. Saying “I wish I missed you” is paradoxical: the speaker clearly does miss the loved one, but may mean that ordinary longing feels too small for this grief. The ending repeats the reassuring words without resolving the sorrow, leaving it uncertain whether the speaker is trying to comfort the other person, or simply struggling to face the loss.
