Down by the willow garden
My love and I did meet
And as we sat a-courtin'
My young love fell asleep
I had a bottle of Burgundy wine
My young love did not know
And there I poisoned that dear little girl
Down by the banks below
I drew my saber through her
Which was a bloody knife
I threw her into the river
Which was a dreadful sight
My father often told me
That money would set me free
If I should murder that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connolly
ย
My father sits in his cabin door
Wipin' his tear-dimmed eyes
He knows today that his only son
Will walk to the scaffold high
My race is run beneath the sun
The gallows now waits for me
For I have murdered that dear little girl
Whose name was Rose Connolly
