Lyrics meaning
The lyrics portray someone working through the night, apparently in a job shaped by staffing cuts, rules, screens, and distant markets. As other places wake up, the speakerโs workday continues, leaving them out of step with ordinary life. The repeated name โDaysleeperโ captures this reversed routine, while the brief admission of crying suggests that exhaustion has become emotional as well as physical.
Several images make the strain vivid. โNewsprint frayโ suggests a blurred, worn-out view of daytime, and โheadache greyโ turns the night into a dull, painful feeling. The speaker calls themself both โthe screenโ and โthe blinding light,โ which may mean they are surrounded by glowing technology and also function as part of its constant flow of work. The โbull and the bearโ are familiar symbols of rising and falling markets, making the speakerโs small, tired perspective contrast with grand financial activity.
The song leaves the speakerโs feelings partly unexplained: they say they cried but cannot say why. That uncertainty fits the sense of accumulated pressure rather than one clear crisis. References to heaven, Valentine, and a โgravityโ pulling toward bed hint at longing for comfort and rest, but they do not resolve the speakerโs situation. The repeated refrain may sound almost like a label the speaker cannot escape.
