Used to walk a chalk line, they drew it on the floor
Used to walk that chalk line, right up to the chapel door
Spoke of fire and damnation, said I couldn't ask for more
Said my soul was thirsty for a water pure and white
Yeah, my soul was thirsty beneath that steeple's light
But every single sip they gave me just felt like a long, dark night
Now I wash my hands in the river, baptize my feet in mud
Got a new congregation, runnin' in my blood
Traded their harsh judgment for the whisper of the flood
My spirit's finally guided by the moon and stars above
My friends are seers and witches, they read the stories in my palm
Yeah, they're healers, workers of the light, keepin' my spirit calm
Got my crystals and my pendulum, a soul-protectin' psalm
Traded pews for forest floors and sermons for the breeze
Gave up kneeling on hard wood for kneeling 'neath the trees
Found more spirit in the weeds than I ever found on my knees
Now I wash my hands in the river, baptize my feet in mud
Got a new congregation, runnin' in my blood
Traded their harsh judgment for the whisper of the flood
My spirit's finally guided by the moon and stars above
The box they built was sturdy, the walls were thick and high
But a soul that's meant to wander can't be afraid to fly
They called my freedom sin, I just call it a new reply
No more holy water, no sir
Just the river runnin' deep
No more Sunday sermons
Just secrets that the wild things keep
While the old church is asleep
