Lyrics meaning
The speaker sees someone he still loves and is overwhelmed by painful feelings. He tries to escape and pray for the pain to stop, but it returns. At first, pride makes him hide his tears and pretend he is clever or strong. By the end, he admits he cannot simply talk himself out of his hurt.
โNeedles and pinsโ is a metaphor for sharp, repeated emotional pain, like a prickling sensation that will not go away. โGet down on my kneesโ suggests desperate pleading or prayer, rather than confidence. When he says he will โlet her goโ and that she may one day feel the same pain, he is imagining a reversal: perhaps she will regret her choice, or experience the hurt he feels now.
The lyrics hold several emotions at once: love, jealousy, wounded pride, and a wish to appear strong. His claim that she is โworse to him than meโ may be an attempt to comfort himself, since he is clearly still suffering. The imagined future in which she asks for love could be a real hope, a bitter fantasy, or both. The song does not resolve whether he will move on or keep longing for her.
