Lyrics meaning
The speaker presents himself as someone who once behaved kindly but is now rejected and angry. Friends avoid him because of what they read in the papers, and even his family appears to suffer social consequences. His mood shifts from wounded confusion to bitter defiance: he repeats that he is no longer โMr. Nice Guy,โ then undercuts the idea that he was truly nice at all.
Several details make his rejection feel exaggerated and comic. His dog bites him and his cat scratches him, as if even pets have turned against him. โThey canโt be seen with meโ means his friends fear being publicly associated with him. Going to church โincognitoโ means he tries to hide who he is, but the Reverend recognizes him and punches himโan absurd escalation that makes the speakerโs isolation seem almost cartoonish.
The lyrics leave the speakerโs character uncertain. He may have been unfairly judged, or the reports and peopleโs reactions may reflect something genuinely troubling about him; the song does not explain what happened. His claim that he is โimpossibleโ sounds partly like a joke and partly like a defensive boast. The final admission that he may never have been nice invites us to question his earlier self-description, while keeping the tone playful rather than fully serious.
