Lyrics meaning
The lyrics begin with the speaker excited by a local revolt: young people are causing trouble, and he wants Angèle to come out and explain what is happening. His curiosity gradually becomes sympathy. Angèle offers a different perspective, saying the young people have reasons for their actions and want to understand where they are being led and who they are.
Several images suggest the force of their protest. The young people “wreck” the rubbish bins, a concrete sign of disorder rather than a detailed account of their cause. Angèle is asked to leave her “feuilleton,” or TV serial, and take her bike, suggesting she should step away from routine and join the real world outside. The lyrics describe the teenagers’ rebellion as being “without hate”: their anger is presented as passionate and searching, not simply destructive.
The song seems to ask listeners to understand young people before judging them. It calls youth an old pain caused by a lack of understanding, implying that generational conflict is not new. Yet the speaker’s final adoration of Angèle may be affectionate exaggeration: she is only about fifteen, but he treats her insight as something adults should respect. The lyrics do not explain exactly what the protest is about, so the emphasis remains on listening, not on deciding whether every act of rebellion is right.
