Lyrics meaning

The singer looks back on a relationship he failed to value when it was happening. He admits that physical desire was not the same as love: although he was drawn to the other person, he says his heart did not understand what the moment required. Now that the relationship has ended, regret and longing dominate, and he promises he would be there if given another chance.

The contrast between โ€œlife between the sheetsโ€ and making love โ€œlastโ€ suggests a difference between short-term physical pleasure and lasting commitment. โ€œGoing down for the countโ€ compares his situation to being defeated in a fight, while โ€œyou are outโ€ implies that the other person has already left the relationship. Calling his past desire a โ€œcriminal needโ€ presents his behavior as harmful: he believes he took the other personโ€™s heart and left them hurt.

The repeated line โ€œI shoulda loved yaโ€ can sound like a sincere realization, but it also leaves some uncertainty. He may now understand that he cared deeply, or he may mainly feel the pain of losing someone and wish he had acted differently. His promise to change is heartfelt in tone, yet the lyrics do not show whether the other person will trust him or return.
