She has such a thick vibrato and it's climbing up the rafters
To where the squatters were evicted, you can still hear Satan's laughter
As I try to thread the needle between living and disaster
There's a calmness to my gaze, you could mistake for a pastor
And I could start a religion, everybody needs a mantra
And if I give them what they need and light a piece of Palo Santo
We could all find some protection, carve a tiny room of knowledge
We can furnish it with lies and drink a sacrament of solace
I could protect you like your mother and abuse you like your father
You'd feel safe in my embrace and want it more when I don't bother
Oh my God, wasn't yesterday incredible?
And I'd have settled for the cheap seats but I'm down here with the actors
And as their spit falls all around me, now I'd like to meet them after
'Cause there's beauty in my soul but they all want bigger and faster
And here the playwright knows catharsis, Aristotle and the masters
If all my friends would be so willing to sit softly in disaster
We'd be high upon the beauty, or at least it'd be a factor
We could roll up our indifference and smoke a fat one to the bastards
Oh my God, wasn't yesterday incredible?
Isn't yesterday so holy?
And I have six words in my head, counting twenty-seven syllables
And I could take your medications 'til they're no longer refillable
But I need some new advice or some new boundaries I can live by
'Cause I'm not doing so well with just the ground and the blue sky
I think I used to be so focused or reliably distracted
Now my avoidance is so deep, I'm barely sexually active
'Cause she still thinks that I left her when it was she that wanted someone else
And she wants my repentance or she just wants me to hate myself
Just one take, you can see she just like this famous actress
She shines chaos like sun 'til moons and men spin off their axes
But now as we sit here, she's painting pictures of her druthers
It turns out she broke up a marriage and that actress is his mother
Oh my God, wasn't yesterday incredible?
So nice
So I put on a pair of jeans and I walk the streets of London
It seems every other building is just scaffold for construction
But St. John's stand proud and erect as I walk eastward out of Kensington
And every other worker, at first glance, thinks I'm a woman
So they turn their heads in shame and then they turn them to the steeple
But I say follow your instinct, you know people are just people
So I decide to hail a taxi and take a rest from all the energy
But they're peddling their hate over the radio like chemistry
A dash of xenophobic and a couple cups of racist
Just a pinch of old entitlement and a dressing I can't taste yet
But it's settled on my tongue and now the flavor's unforgettable
That sentimental song "Wasn't yesterday incredible?"
Wasn't yesterday incredible?
Wasn't yesterday so holy?
They say they're on your side and you can make your country great again
When, really, what they're doing is insisting that you hate again
We've heard this song before, how many die before we listen?
How many Kennedys and kings? How many lovers we'll be missing?
And we used to sing the songs and let our problems fill the airwaves
Now it's Xanax for the groove and hydrocodone for the melody
And I'm fine with all the numbness and, at times, you know I need it
But if we don't insist on feeling, turning feeling into movement
We'll be swallowed by the fear instead of learning from the darkness
Oh my God
Oh my God
Wasn't yesterday incredible?
Oh my God
And I could have chosen living death, it's right there for the taking
Yes, my family would support it, four less hearts that I'd be breaking
'Cause the singer likes to sing that he never meant to hurt you
But the hurt is so important, keeps me calm and then alert to
Say the words I need to hear because I want to live eternally
Or I'd like to die right now and let tomorrow shine infernally
The futility of life is only strong for the discouraged
And the miracle of progress only strong if we secure it
So hate me if you'd like or be my strength in love and modern lust
Just care about me and I will care for you until we burn off into dust
Wasn't yesterday incredible?
Oh my God
Wasn't yesterday so holy?
