Solitaire

The lyrics describe a man who has lost love, partly because he did not show enough care while he had it. He responds by withdrawing from other people and convincing himself that he will never love again. The mood is sad and resigned: hope briefly appears, but fades, while the world continues around him and he remains alone.

“Solitaire” is both the card game and a metaphor for living in isolation. Playing it by himself suggests a life with no shared affection or companionship. The repeated idea that every road “takes him down” makes his choices seem to lead toward further sadness, while “a little hope goes up in smoke” portrays hope disappearing quickly and completely.

The song’s account of his loneliness is compassionate, but it also hints at responsibility: his indifference helped cause the loss, and keeping to himself now maintains the pain. His claim that he will never love again may be a genuine belief, or a way to avoid risking rejection. The lyrics do not say whether he can change; they leave him caught between regret and the possibility of choosing a different path.
