Lyrics meaning

The speaker is reassuring someone that he is not a smooth, unfaithful lover, but an ordinary man who sincerely wants a lasting relationship. At first, he repeatedly denies being a โ€œCasanovaโ€; as the song develops, he explains that he loves and needs this person, wants her as his wife, and hopes she will stay with him. His feelings are strong, though he admits that he sometimes struggles to express them.

โ€œCasanovaโ€ is used as a shorthand for a charming man who romances many women. By saying he is not one, the speaker contrasts himself with a womanizer. โ€œMe and Romeo have never been friendsโ€ makes a similar point: Romeo represents the famous romantic lover, and the speaker distances himself from that idealized image. โ€œOn my knees for youโ€ suggests devotion and pleading, rather than a literal description of what he is doing.

The repeated denials may sound playful or emphatic, but they also suggest that the speaker feels the need to prove his sincerity. Calling himself an โ€œaverage guyโ€ makes his love seem honest and unshowy, while the intense promises and repeated โ€œI need youโ€ convey dependence as well as affection. The lyrics do not tell us why the other person might doubt him, so the song can be heard either as simple reassurance or as a response to an unstated concern.
